RapidSMS is a free and open source framework that leverages basic short message service (SMS) mobile phone technology to collect data, coordinate logistics and enhance communication both quickly and accurately. The RapidSMS framework can be easily customized to meet the individual needs of implementers, empowering stakeholders with a dynamic tool that is fast, efficient and low cost. RapidSMS projects have enabled field workers to register medical patients from far-flung communities, record and track the nutrition data of children, and increase the efficiency of food distribution monitoring in famine situations.

RapidSMS responds to one of the greatest challenges facing field operations – access to a large volume of accurate, timely and actionable information at low cost. RapidSMS technology aims to dramatically improve access to information, reduce costs and deliver the tools to a global audience.

The Impact

RapidSMS has transformed the way data can be collected and utilized. In one example of the far reaching effects of RapidSMS, community health care workers can now identify, diagnose and track sick children utilizing streamlined technology that is automatically updated in a central system.
